#Timo Becker has won the “Fair Play of the Season” award given by the German Football League (DFL). Our defender was nominated for his fair play in the Storks’ match against SV #Wehen Wiesbaden on matchday 32 and beat the five other nominees.

It was the 54th minute of the game when Becker fell to the ground in the opponent’s penalty area with the score at 0:0 in the away match in Wiesbaden. Because the 27-year-old then told Goppel directly that the ball had not been hit by him, and also confirmed in an interview with TV channel Sky after the game that he had fallen but had not wanted to win a penalty, and also underlined the importance of the idea of fair play in sport, our winger was nominated by the German Football League (DFL) for the “Fair Play of the Season” award – and has now been awarded the prize by the jury.

This jury consists – analogous to the monthly elections for “Player of the Month” and “Rookie of the Month” – of an expert panel (weighting: 30 percent), which includes #Bundesliga legends and selected media partners. In addition to the expert panel, fans have a heavily weighted share in the voting (40 percent). The team captains of the clubs (30 percent) were also entitled to vote.

Becker has undoubtedly presented himself as a fair sportsman, stressed DFB legend Philipp Lahm, who selected the six fair play moments from last season. “After he was hit, he told his opponent directly that he had not been fouled. The combination of engaging in dialogue with the opponent and later emphasizing in the interview that fair play is the be-all and end-all is remarkable,” praised the 113-time German international.

“I am delighted to have won the trophy and would like to thank everyone who voted for me,” said Becker. “This shows me that fairness always wins in the end – and that’s how it should be!” added the newly crowned winner.
