Marking 60 years of the #UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), UN #SecretaryGeneral #Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that “trade has become a double-edged sword: a source of prosperity and inequality; interconnection and dependence; economic innovation and environmental degradation”.
Warning that new trade barriers introduced annually have nearly tripled since 2019 —“many driven by geopolitical rivalry”—, he added that the world cannot afford splits into rival blocs.
In this context, the role of UN #Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in promoting inclusive and sustainable development through trade and investment remains essential to achieve a better future for all, the Secretary-General stressed.
